About Kelly Butte Natural Area

Kelly Butte Natural Area is a 21-acre protected green space located in southeast Portland, Oregon. It occupies an extinct volcanic cinder cone, known as Kelly Butte, which rises to approximately 560 feet in elevation and provides sweeping views of the Portland metropolitan area. The natural area preserves forested habitat dominated by Douglas-fir and western red cedar, as well as open grassy areas and rock outcroppings. Historically, the site was home to a municipal prison and a Cold War-era civil defense bunker, both of which have left haunting ruins that remain visible on the property. Visitors can explore interpretive signage detailing these historical features alongside natural and geological points of interest. Kelly Butte offers a quiet outdoor experience with multiple gravel and paved trails suitable for hiking, biking, and bird watching. Its proximity to urban neighborhoods makes it a favored destination for locals seeking nature and recreation close to the city. The natural area also serves ecological functions such as stormwater management and native plant restoration. Wildlife that can be spotted includes songbirds, squirrels, and occasional raptors. The area's trail system connects to nearby neighborhoods and other green spaces, encouraging exploration beyond its boundaries. Kelly Butte Natural Area is managed by Portland Parks & Recreation, focusing on habitat enhancement and maintaining safe, enjoyable outdoor access for visitors. The blend of natural features, historical intrigue, and cityscape views make Kelly Butte a distinctive recreational spot in Portland.
